Letterbox Doughnuts

Q’s & A’s with Jon & Priom from Letterbox Doughnuts

Introduce yourselves

Priom: I’m Priom, one of the co-founders of Letterbox Doughnuts. We have been around for about two years now, but this is our newest location. So, super excited about it.

Jon: And I’m Jon. I’m the other co-founder of Letterbox Doughnuts, which is behind us here.

What makes Letterbox Doughnuts special?

Priom: I think, in Toronto, there’s so many different doughnut shops. Obviously, we make doughnuts, but our doughnuts are in the shape of letters. So, you can send out messages which makes it really personal.

Jon: I think what makes us special is that really what we’re selling and providing people is celebrations and emotions and things that you can celebrate individuality.

“Trexity really allowed us to focus on other aspects of the business. Knowing that they were there to support any of our delivery growth was super reassuring.”

What does an average day look like for Letterbox?

Priom: I would say we definitely have a pretty early start to the day. Our bakers get in around 6:00 AM. Our team makes all of the doughnuts, prep everything, do all the glazing, get everything ready for Trexity to come in and pick all of our packages up. And then, on the back end, for Jon and myself, it’s a lot of working with our customers, really getting their vision, getting a sense of what they want and just letting our bakers know what that looks like.

Tell us how Letterbox Doughnuts began.

Jon: We started in the summer of 2020. Priom is an avid cooker/baker and everything she made was something that I would pay money for. And obviously, with COVID, we had more time in our hands. At the same time, a friend had seen Letter Donuts in LA and had pressed Priom, “Could you do this? Could you do this?” And I was totally on board.

Tell us how Letterbox is growing?

Priom: I would say growth has been a lot faster than what we thought it was going to be. We originally started this with just sending it out to family and friends, then we moved into a shared kitchen, and now we have our own space in a matter of a year and a half. So, I feel that we’ve been growing very fast, trying to keep up with the pace. I think that’s the most difficult part of the job.

The plan is to carry on this growth, with the help of Trexity, just to expand our delivery areas. I’m finding that we have to say no to a lot of people that live very far away, and so, hoping that, with the addition of obviously your help, we can start to expand our business further.

Can you share some challenges Letterbox has faced along the way?

Jon: One of the big problems was figuring out, okay, do we want to be delivery only? How do we handle pickups early on? With Trexity we didn’t have to try to solve that problem, and that was big. That just meant we were able to reach more people.

Tell us more about the Trexity partnership. How is that working?

Priom: Obviously, one of the big challenges with any business is managing growth and your ability to handle that growth. And for us Trexity really allowed us to focus on other aspects of the business and knowing that Trexity was there to support any of the delivery growth we needed.

How has Trexity made your life easier?

Jon: It’s just allowed us to do more delivery. Whereas before one of our limiting factors was the number of deliveries we could do a day and then trying to hire a delivery team. Now, I don’t have to worry about that at all. I know we can take on as many deliveries within the GTA per day as our team can handle. So, it just gives me a lot of peace of mind in that regard.

Priom: I feel like, for us, it just allows us to help more people. We hate to say no to our customers. And so, now we don’t have to say no to our customers. So, it’s a great thing. You can’t go wrong.
